How does it work?: Around 20% of a cars fuel use is because the friction from its tires. The rubber compound in the new efficient tires has silca in it which reduces friction between the molecules of the tire. That means less energy is wasted and you get better fuel economy. The rolling-resistance measures how much effort the car has to put into making the tires roll along the pavement. Tires with low rolling resistance use a tread deisgn and new materials to minimize the amount of energy (gasoline) required to move the car.

Benefits: There are many avantages gained by adding silica to the tread compound of tires, the key advantage is the ablity to reduce fuel usage while still maintaning critical qualities such as wet grip.

Deficits: Deficits include that the tires are known to wear out faster than normal tires, some times offer up to a 60,000 mile more tread warrenty.

Who developed this? : The Goodyear tire and rubber company has been selected as exclusive developers of these tires. They made these tires in thought of the U.S. Army, for the Fuel Efficiant Ground Vehicle Demonstrator Program. This program was launched by the U.S. Army's Tanks Automotive Research, Developmeant and Engineering Center.


Why was this developed? : The original development was for comercial truck tires. These tires were also made to help develop the possibilities of technologically advanced, fuel efficient vehicles for the U.S. Military. Proven over millions of tests miles Goodyear's tecnology for truck tires includes reduced rolling-resistance into the tire which helps improve the number of miles per gallon, and can help result in quick savings and fuel cost.

What is the history of this technology: Before the fuel efficient tires they put brand new batteries, tires, exhaust systems, tramissions, brakes, even motors into the vechicles. Then started to think that the cars needed tires that are fuel efficient, a tire with long milage, a tire with good wet traction, and a tire that you don't have to change when the weather does. As a result, in October of 2003, they started the Fuel Efficient Tire Program. The technology was introduced in Goodyear's tires for the European market and was later shown by Goodyear-Dunlop in Japan. The tire made its first apperance on a fuel efficient version of the new Ford Fiesta and also appearded later on some BMWs.

Decription of the Technology: The tires are designed with a strong grip during all kinds of weather. With the use of silica, it reduces the amount of thermal energy and decreases rolling resistance. NanoPro-Tech technology is added to the tread compound for more control. NanoPro-Tech technology uses polymer with controlled micro-structure for successful carbon despersion to control the build up of heat because of the carbon particles, which reduces the use of energy.

Examples of the product: Some good examples of fuel efficient tires are Michelin's MXM4 tires or Goodyear's G305 LHD tires.
